Direct Trade Coffee: Fairer Than Fair Trade?

Direct Trade Coffee: Fairer Than Fair Trade?
There's a debate in the coffee world: Fair Trade is better. No, Direct Trade is better. What actually is Direct Trade? And is it really fairer?
Fair Trade - The Certification
Fair Trade is a certification system. It says : "This coffee was grown under certain standards." The farmer receives a minimum price per kilo - about USD 1.40-1.50 (depending on market price). That's higher than the world market price. That's the deal.
Fair Trade is good. It protects small farmers. It's helped many. But it has a problem: the minimum price is often just enough for the farmer to survive. It's a certificate, not a real relationship.
Direct Trade - The Relationship
Direct Trade is different. There's no certificate. It's about relationship. A roaster visits the farm, talks with the farmer, understands his costs. They agree on a fair price - not based on a standard, but based on the farm's reality.
A Direct Trade farmer often gets USD 3-4 per kilo. Sometimes more. The roaster pays directly, with no middleman. The money goes straight to the farmer.
Transparency vs. Certificate
Fair Trade says : "Trust us, we checked." Direct Trade says : "Here's the farmer's name, his farm, his coffee, the price we paid."
Direct Trade is more transparent. You know the name, location, story. You know who your money helps. That's the opposite of anonymous.
The Challenge with Direct Trade
Direct Trade isn't scalable. A roaster can't personally visit 200 farmers. That costs time and money. That's why Direct Trade roasters work with few farmers - but deeply.
Fair Trade is scalable. The system works at large volumes. That's why there's much more Fair Trade coffee than Direct Trade.
Why Specialty Roasters Love Direct Trade
For specialty roasters, quality matters. To get high-quality beans, you must talk to the farmer. You must understand how he grows. You must have the relationship.
Direct Trade fits specialty coffee. It's not just about minimum price - it's about best quality, best relationship, best story.
The Truth
Direct Trade isn't automatically better than Fair Trade. It depends on the farmer, the roaster, the relationship. A dishonest roaster could abuse Direct Trade and still pay little. A good Fair Trade system reliably protects the farmer.
But Direct Trade - when genuine - builds real partnerships. The farmer isn't just a source for beans. The farmer is a partner.
At Roestpost
