Coffee Filters: Paper vs. Metal - Which Is Better?
A question many coffee lovers ask: Should I use paper or metal filters? The answer isn't simple, because both have their strengths. It depends on what you prefer.
The Taste: Paper vs. Metal
This is the biggest difference. Paper filters remove natural oils from coffee. The result: clean, bright, almost transparent coffee. The delicate nuances shine through. If you want to taste an Ethiopian coffee with bergamot notes, use paper. You'll taste the finesse.
Metal filters let the oils pass through. The coffee becomes fuller, creamier, more intense. Roast flavors speak louder. A dark-roasted Brazilian through a metal filter is like chocolate and nut flavors in a cup. It's not better or worse - it's simply different.
Extraction Fineness
Paper filters also trap fine particles (microfines). This makes the coffee smoother. Metal filters let them through, resulting in fuller body but also slightly grainier texture. Some love it, some don't.
One important tip: rinse your paper filters with hot water before brewing. This removes the papery taste and makes the coffee richer.
The Environment
Metal wins clearly here. A metal filter lasts 5+ years and costs nothing after purchase. A paper filter gets discarded after one use. One person can use over 700 paper filters per year. That sounds like nothing, but multiplied across millions of households it's a real problem.
Paper filters are biodegradable, but usually end up in landfills or incinerators where they produce methane. If you compost, great. But less than 30% of people do.
Metal filters have a higher manufacturing footprint, but they pay for themselves quickly. After two to three months of regular use, the metal filter has already "paid off" environmentally compared to paper.
What Else Should You Know?
Metal filters need thorough rinsing and drying, otherwise oils accumulate and the next cup tastes rancid. With paper filters, that's not an issue.
Metal filters are more durable. Paper tears easily. Metal lasts for years.
The Decision
Do you like clarity, brightness, fine nuances? Paper. Do you prefer fullness, body, intensity? Metal. Do you value sustainability and long-term thinking? Metal. At Röstpost, we recommend the best brewing method for each coffee - so you discover for yourself what you love.
