How to Store Coffee: Keep It Fresh
Great coffee loses its complexity in two weeks if stored wrong. Good news: it's simple. Just four things to avoid.
The Four Enemies of Coffee
Air, light, moisture, and heat - each destroys coffee differently.
1. Air (Oxidation)
Enemy number one. Oxygen oxidizes the coffee. Aroma compounds disappear. Oils go rancid. Taste becomes flat.
Solution: Store in airtight container. Best is a jar with vacuum seal or paper bag with clip, sealed well.
2. Light
UV radiation speeds oxidation. Light ages coffee faster.
Solution: Store in the dark. Dark jar, dark cabinet corner. Not on windowsill.
3. Moisture
Coffee absorbs water from air. Wet beans ferment and mold quickly.
Solution: Store in dry place. Not bathroom, not under sink. Normal kitchen cabinet is perfect.
4. Heat
Heat speeds everything: oxidation, decay, aroma loss.
Solution: Store at room temperature. Ideal 15-25 degrees Celsius. Not in fridge.
Whole Beans vs. Ground Coffee
Whole beans stay fresh 2-4 weeks. Ground coffee loses aroma in days. Always grind yourself, just before brewing.
How Long Does Coffee Stay Fresh?
With proper storage: whole beans 2-4 weeks optimal, up to 6-8 weeks acceptable. Ground coffee 3-7 days optimal.
